One of our goals at Cathedral School is to make students life-long readers. This year we would like to employ a few strategies to get the reading buzz going.
Pre-K – 5th Grade:
Mrs. Davis is our Media Assistant. She is coordinating a program called “Pop Open a Good Book.” Students will color a piece of popcorn on their reading sheet when they have read for 20 minutes. They can turn in their sheets at the end of the month for a prize from the treasure chest. At the end of the year we will have a popcorn party to celebrate our reading success.
6th – 8th Grade:
Middle school will have a different reading incentive program just for them. Each month we will highlight a different genre. Students who read a book that month will be asked to fill out a sheet answering a few questions about the book. These sheets will be distributed to their email accounts and will also be available at the media center. When they turn in their papers to the media center it becomes their ticket for a drawing. The drawing will be for the student who gets to check out a Kindle for the next month. Also, each middle school student will receive an invitation to participate in the “Cathedral Middle School Reading Blog.” We will post questions about what the kids are reading and hope to get some dialog going about some good books. At the end of the month we will ask the kids what good books in that genre they think the school should purchase for the media center.
