1.  American Revolution - the war in which the American colonies fought for

independence from Great Britain.

 

2.  militia - a group of Patriots who agreed to act a soldiers during the

Revolution.

 

3.  provincial congress - a meeting of Patriots before or during the American

Revolution

 

4.  delegate - a person who represents others

 

5.  United States Constitution - the set of laws by which the United States is

governed

 

6.  representatives -a citizen who acts and speaks for others in a lawmaking

body

 

7.  General Assembly - a group of lawmakers elected to represent others

 

8.  mint - a place where coins are made

 

9.  cotton gin - a machine invented to separate the seeds from cotton

 

10. Know important dates:  Halifax Resolves ( April 12, 1776), Mecklenburg

Declaration (May 20, 1775, p394) state independence day, end of the

Revolutionary War, gold found in NC, and others.

 

11.  Know what the Halifax Resolves and the Mecklenburg Declaration were. 

 

12.  Know important people such as Joel Lane, Richard Caswell, Penelope

Barker, Joel Battle, Nathaniel Greene, William Christmas, Christopher Bechtler,

Daniel and Rebecca Boone, Joseph Hewes, William Hooper, John Penn, William

Tryon, John and Conrad Reed, Edwin Holt, Eli Whitney, Michael Schenck.

 

12.  Know cause and effect skills.  What does a cause tell you, and what does an

effect tell you?

 

13.  Know about gold mining, cotton gins, cotton mills, & famous roads of North

Carolina such as the Wilderness Road and the Great Wagon Road.

 

14.  Know about our state government.  What can the assembly do and what can

the governor do?  Who was our first governor?

 

15.  Know that New Bern was the first state capital.   Tryon Palace was the first

colonial capital of North Carolina. 

16. Why did the people of North Carolina not want New Bern as their permanent

capital?  Why did it move around and then finally settle in Raleigh?

 

17.  Know what was so important about the battle at Guilford Courthouse. (p176)

What other battles did North Carolinians take part in?  Who was General 

Cornwallis?

 

18.  Why did many colonists start moving west?

 

19.  Know that UNC began in 1795 as the first state-supported university in the

United States.

 

20.  Know that the first United States mint was opened in Charlotte, in 1837. 

What was the name of the person who opened the first mint in Rutherford

County?  (Christopher Bechtler)

 

21.  Know about the French and Indian War.  Who all fought on both sides, and

why were they fighting?

 

22.  Know the difference between a Loyalist and a Patriot.

 

23.  Know about the Stamp Act, the Towhshend Act, and the Sugar Act.   Why

did Britain start these acts, and what effect did they have on the colonists.

 

24.  Know that Wilmington and Fayetteville were the two largest towns in North

Carolina in the 1800's.

 

25.  Know a little of how the city of Raleigh is laid out.  It's like a grid, with

squares and streets.  Its original boundaries were North, South, East, and West

streets. 

 

26.  Know that our first capital building in Raleigh was built in 1796.  It burned

down in 1831 but was rebuilt by 1840 and this is the capital building we have

today.        

 

27.  Why was North Carolina important during the time of the American

Revolution?
