Vocabulary

 

1.  Reconstruction - the name given to the plan to rebuild the South after the Civil War

 

2.  contract - an agreement supported by law

 

3.  sharecropping - farming land for an owner in return for a share of the crops

 

4.  tenant farming - farming land for an owner and paying rent in cash or by giving the owner a share of the crops

 

5.  credit - an agreement to pay back money that was borrowed by a certain time

 

6.  amendment - an addition or change to the Constitution

 

7.  segregate - to set apart from others

 

8.  debt - something that is owed to another

 

9.  suffrage- the right to vote

 

10.  public school - an elementary or high school supported by taxes

 

11.  illiterate - not knowing how to read or write

 

1.  Know how to write an outline, how the letters and numbers are used, what is important, etc.  What are they used for?  Where are they helpful? 

 

2.  Why was there more damage in the South than the North after the Civil War? Most of the battles were fought in the South, and the South lost the war.

 

3.  After the war, over 350,000 slaves were freed.  Partly because of this, the average size of farms and plantations decreased in NC.

 

4.  Know that reconstruction of the South took 12 years (from 1865-1877) and it included having Confederate states rejoin the Union.

 

5.  Know what the Freedmen's Bureau was and what it did for North Carolina, especially in education.  What was its purpose?

 

6.  You should know about sharecroppers and tenant farmers.  Did they own, or rent the land?  Did they still work for their former masters?  How are these two ways of farming different?  Why didn't farm owners and workers dislike the "contract" system of farming?

 

7.  Know how farm life changed in the South.  Why did many people leave the farms and move to the cities?

 

8.   What industries became very big in our state, as farming was becoming less popular?  Know about the textile, tobacco, and furniture industries.  What were the names of the men who started up these industries, and the names of their companies?

 

9.  Know that modernization and machinery helped increase production in many industries.

 

10. How did better roads and railroads help the new industries being built in our state?

 

11.  How did the lives of freed slaves change after the Civil War?

 

12.  Know the amendments (paraphrase) that we discussed in class.

          13th - outlawed slavery

          14th - equal treatment under the law - made black people citizens of the U.S.

          15th - gave male black citizens the right to vote

          19th - gave women the right to vote
